State Veterans Service Officer to Resume Scheduled Visits to Jackson County

12/20/2011

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance (WVDVA) today announced greater access to some services will be available to veterans in the Jackson County area beginning Jan. 5.

Norma Ferrell, a professional Veterans’ Service Officer (VSO), will soon be visiting senior centers in both Ripley and Ravenswood on the first Thursday of each month in order to meet with area veterans and their dependents. VSOs are trained to assist veterans who were honorably discharged and their family members with applying for any state or federal benefit for which he or she may be qualified.

Currently, veterans located in Jackson County who wish to meet with a state VSO are required to travel to Spencer, W.Va., where Ferrell works out of one of the state’s 15 field service offices. That office will continue to serve Jackson County residents in addition to the monthly visits to Ripley and Ravenswood.

Veterans who are interested in filing a claim are encouraged to schedule an appointment with Ferrell or a VSO at the field service office nearest them. A directory of field service offices and which counties they serve can be found at www.veterans.wv.gov. Details regarding Ferrell’s upcoming visits to Ripley and Ravenswood are below and she can be contacted directly at 304-927-0980.
