November 11, 2012 - Veterans Day! Let us know what's going on in your town!

Charleston: Saturday, Nov. 10, the Charleston Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. This is the 70th year for the parade and it was recently named by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs a Regional Veterans Day Site!

White Sulphur Springs: Monday, Nov. 12, a Veterans Day Build, sponsored by Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity, will convene to repair the roof of a widow and mother of veterans.

Beckley: Monday, Nov. 12, American Legion Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. All veterans welcome to participate!


November 15, 2012 - Stand Down in Ashland, KY

Shelter of Hope will be hosting a Stand Down from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Neighbors Helping Neighbors building in Ashland Kentucky as part of Homeless Awareness Week. Click here for more information.

The Small Business Development Center is hosting a free workshop for veterans interested in starting their own business. 
 

September 15, 2012 - West Virginia's Tribute to Korean War Veterans

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 15, activities will take place on the State Capitol grounds to honor veterans of the Korean War. 



July 27, 28 & 29, 2012 - Sergeant Talbert Memorial Ride

In memory of Sergeant Deforest Talbert, KIA in 2004, there will be a motorcycle ride from Eleanor, WV to Washington DC.

June 23, 2012 - Homeless Veterans Ride 2012

On June 23rd, bicyclists from the Huntington area will embark on a six-day, 425-mile ride to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for the Homeless Veterans Resource Center in downtown Huntington. Tri-State Chapter 949 of the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District are hosting a Veterans Appreciation Picnic at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington on June 2, 2012. Check out details here.



May 28, 2012 - Memorial Day

The Grand Opening of the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery will take place at 3 pm. Click here for more details. You don't want to miss this event!




May 26, 2012 - Memorial Day Homecoming at Riverfront Park in Ravenswood

The City of Ravenswood will be honoring local veterans at a special Memorial Weekend event featuring the musical stylings of Bo Bice and Chase Likens! Events begin at noon and will wrap up with a fireworks display.



May 25 - 28, 2012 - Traveling Vietnam Wall Comes to South Charleston

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall will be at Oakes Field in South Charleston for Memorial Weekend. The South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau invites all veterans, military personnel, families and community members to come visit the memorial. Anyone interested in volunteering to help out with this event should call 304-746-5552.



May 24, 2012 - Run For The Wall Capitol Visit

Each year veterans, friends and family ride motorcycles across the United States to honor veterans and support military personnel beginning in California and ending in Washington, D.C. The group will be making stops in West Virginia on Wednesday, May 23rd and Thursday, May 24th. Approximately 350 motorcyclists will gather at the Veterans War Memorial at 9 a.m. that Thursday for a short ceremony and a Proclamation. Come out and show your support!



May 19, 2012 - Armed Forces Day

The South Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau is hosting their 53rd Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 19, 2012. For more details click here. Let us know what's going on in other parts of the state!



May 5, 2012 - Memorial Benefit 5K Run and Walk

The West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg will be hosting the Second Annual Memorial Benefit 5K Run and Walk on Saturday, May 5, 2012, on the grounds of the Veterans Park. Early registration is just $15.00 and all proceeds will directly benefit the residents of the Veterans Nursing Facility. In addition, participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt and race winners will be awarded a trophy. Check back frequently for more information!



Veteran's Council Meeting - Friday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m.


The West Virginia Veteran's Council will hold their quarterly meeting on Friday, May 4th at 1:00 p.m. at the West Virginia Dept. of Veterans Assistance Administrative Office located at 1514-B Kanawha Blvd., East, Charleston, WV 25311. Contact Angela Meadows for more information.



April 21, 2012 - Wild Warrior Challenge

The Wild Warrior Challenge is a 5k mud crawling, rugged terrain, challenging adventure race inspired by National Guard training courses to test your limits. The event will be held in Morgantown, West Virginia and will include military vehicles, equipment and simulators for interactive display. For more information, click here.

Veteran's Council Meeting

The upcoming Veteran's Council Meeting has been set for Friday, January 27 at the Donel Kinnard Memorial Veterans State Cemetery located at 130 Academy Drive in Dunbar, behind the State Police.


 

 

December 5, 2011 - Wreaths Across America State House Ceremony

Wreaths Across America is a nation wide initiative designed to encourage communities throughout the country to remember veterans during the holiday season. Each year nearly all 50 states participate in a State House Ceremony as part of the effort. This year's wreath laying ceremony in West Virginia will take place at the Veterans Memorial on the State Capitol Complex at approximately 11:30 on December 5. November 11, 2011 - Charleston's Veterans Day Parade

John Brawley Post 20 of The American Legion announced yesterday that they are hosting the 2011 Veterans’ Day Parade in Charleston! The parade is scheduled to step off at 10:00 am, Friday, November 11, on Kanawha Boulevard, East of the South Side Bridge. It will end at Haddad Riverfront Park, where there will be a short ceremony honoring Women in the Military. Mark your calendars, and come celebrate veterans!



November 11, 2011- Unveiling of the West Virginia Female Veteran Memorial Statue

The West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance (DVA) invites all West Virginians and visitors to the unveiling of the West Virginia Female Veteran Memorial Statue at the state Capitol Complex, on Nov. 11.

The event is scheduled to begin at noon, following Charleston’s Annual Veterans Day Parade, and will include remarks from Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Tomblin, along with other special guests. The ceremony will focus on honoring women in the armed forces.



VA Urges Breast Cancer Awareness

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October by asking all female Veterans to talk with their health care providers about appropriate breast cancer screenings, such as regular mammograms.More information

at the Veteran's Nursing Facility in Clarksburg, West Virginia.

October 7 & 8, 2011 - The 64th Annual Veterans Service Officer Conference

Veterans benefits and eligibility are ever-changing, so it's important that your post officers, including your service officers, be continually updated. This year's conference will be held in Summersville and includes an outstanding training agenda with several excellent speakers from the VA Regional Office and the VA Medical Centers. As always, the conference will provide comradery and fellowship, as well as an opportunity to share ideas. We hope to see you there! To view the Conference application, click here.
