The role of the Cabinet Secretary’s Office is to provide support, guidance and oversight to all state-funded veteran related facilities and programs. The Cabinet Secretary and his administrative staff serve as liaisons between these facilities, veterans from throughout the state, the Office of the Governor and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The West Virginia Veterans Home is a facility reserved specifically for veterans in need of a convenient and comfortable home. It is designed for individuals who are ambulatory and independent in all activities of daily living. It can house 150 veterans at full capacity and is operated by a staff of approximately 50 employees. Click here for more information.

The West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility provides the full spectrum of long-term care services as typically provided at private nursing facilities, but at a fraction of the cost. It was opened in 2007, has the capacity to serve up to 120 veterans at a time, and includes a unit specifically for Alzheimer patients. Click here for more information.

The Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery (DCKMSVC) is a 354 acre facility designed to provide an honorable, dignified resting place for West Virginia’s cherished veterans and their closest family members. Throughout its lifetime, the cemetery will accommodate burial space for approximately 60,000 qualified individuals. For more information about the DCKMSVC please click here.
Field Service Offices
There are 16 field service offices located in various areas throughout the state. Their primary role is to guide and assist veterans in obtaining benefits and filing claims. Any veteran who is applying for federal or state assistance or benefits of any kind should visit their local field office.

Claims Offices
There are two claims offices operating under the West Virginia Department of Veterans Assistance, but are housed by federal Veterans Affairs offices located in Huntington and Pittsburgh, PA. Claims office employees are responsible for processing all claims filed by West Virginia veterans, and serve as the link between West Virginia field service offices and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Outreach Services
There are currently four veterans outreach social workers employed by the Department of Veterans Assistance, whose role is to ensure that veterans throughout the state receive the services they need. These individuals travel West Virginia communities on a daily basis, providing information, support and guidance to individuals in need of medical care, homeless shelters, and a myriad of other services.
